BALTIMORE, Md. — The cybersecurity community is mourning the loss of Joe Marshall, a respected industrial control systems expert and Senior IoT Security Strategist with Cisco Talos Intelligence Group, who died on June 7, 2026.
Marshall was widely recognized for his work in industrial control systems (ICS), operational technology (OT), embedded systems security, and critical infrastructure protection. Throughout a career spanning both the public and private sectors, he became known as a leading voice in cybersecurity, helping organizations understand and defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
At Cisco Talos, one of the world’s largest commercial threat intelligence organizations, Marshall served as Senior Security Strategist and Industrial Control Systems Subject Matter Expert. In that role, he provided guidance on cyber risk, researched emerging threats, and worked to strengthen protections for critical infrastructure systems relied upon by governments, businesses, and communities.
Colleagues remembered Marshall not only for his technical expertise but also for his dedication to mentorship and collaboration. His personal motto, “Fight the good fight, help others,” reflected a career devoted to protecting people and technology while supporting the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
Before returning to Cisco Talos in 2021, Marshall held leadership positions in cybersecurity research and critical infrastructure security. He previously served as Industrial Control Systems Security Research Manager at Cisco, where he led teams focused on identifying vulnerabilities in operational technology systems used around the world.
His professional experience also included cybersecurity roles with energy providers, defense organizations, and government-related initiatives. During his career, he contributed to efforts involving threat intelligence, vulnerability management, cyber defense, and the protection of critical infrastructure systems.
A graduate of University of Maryland Global Campus, Marshall earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. He was widely respected for his ability to explain complex technical issues in practical terms and for his willingness to share knowledge with colleagues across the industry.
Outside of cybersecurity, friends remembered Marshall for his curiosity, humor, and love of music. He often joked that his interests included “banjos, threat research, and helping keep the Internet safe,” a description that many said captured both his personality and his passion for his work.
News of his death prompted tributes from cybersecurity professionals, researchers, and friends who praised his leadership, generosity, and lasting contributions to the field. Many noted that his influence extended far beyond the projects he worked on, reaching the countless individuals he mentored throughout his career.
