DURAND, Wis. — Family, friends, coworkers, and members of the Durand community are mourning the tragic loss of Christian Jean Bates, 54, of rural Durand, who was found deceased early Saturday morning at a worksite in Durand Township.
According to authorities, Bates, a longtime employee and construction supervisor with Nelson Telephone Cooperative (NTEC Telecommunications), was discovered at approximately 3 a.m. after coworkers became concerned when he failed to return at the conclusion of his shift.
Officials said Bates was working at a construction site when concern arose regarding his whereabouts. NTEC personnel began searching the area after he did not report back as expected and subsequently contacted law enforcement for assistance.
The Pepin County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the missing-person report. During the search, emergency personnel located Bates inside a shallow excavation at the worksite. He was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, authorities have not determined the cause or manner of death. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation.
An autopsy has been scheduled through the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnesota to help determine the exact cause of death. In addition, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has initiated a workplace review as part of the ongoing investigation.
