MINNETONKA, Minn. — Family, friends, former colleagues, and community members are mourning the unexpected loss of Scott Robert Gerlicher, a longtime leader in public safety whose career spanned more than three decades of service. Gerlicher died at his home on June 6, 2026, at the age of 58.
Born on November 13, 1967, in Minneapolis, Gerlicher was raised in Minnetonka, where he developed deep roots that would remain a defining part of his life. After graduating from Minnetonka High School, he continued his education at Normandale Community College and Metropolitan State University, earning a master’s degree in Public Administration. He was also a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy.
Gerlicher devoted more than 30 years to the Minneapolis Police Department, serving from 1989 until his retirement in 2021. Rising through the ranks from patrol officer to deputy chief, he became known for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to public safety.
Among the most significant moments of his career was his role in coordinating police efforts during the Interstate 35W bridge collapse, as well as helping oversee public safety planning for Super Bowl LII and the NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis. Colleagues frequently cited his ability to manage complex operations while maintaining a collaborative approach with community partners and public safety agencies.
Following his retirement from law enforcement, Gerlicher continued serving the public as Security and Emergency Management Coordinator for Minnetonka Public Schools. His dedication to protecting others remained evident throughout his post-retirement work, where he focused on school safety and emergency preparedness.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Gerlicher was known for his adventurous spirit and enthusiasm for life. An avid skier, he spent 25 years with Ski Jammers as both an instructor and director. He also enjoyed boating on Lake Minnetonka, creating music playlists, and bringing friends and family together through his humor and creativity.
Friends recall his quick wit, infectious laughter, and ability to make every gathering memorable. Whether organizing community events, mentoring colleagues, or spending time with loved ones, he approached life with energy, generosity, and a genuine appreciation for people.
In recent years, he remained active in community service, volunteering as logistical coordinator for Excelsior Rotary Concerts in the Commons and serving as Director of Security for the Taste of Minnesota festival. These roles reflected his lifelong commitment to civic engagement and community well-being.
Gerlicher is survived by his wife, Cari; daughters Hannah Schneider, Emma, and Molly; his father, Dr. Robert Gerlicher; his sister, Susan Olson; several nephews; and his beloved cats, Poppy and JoJo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Gerlicher.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for June 12 at The Lafayette Club in Minnetonka Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to Breakthrough T1D or the Hendrickson Foundation.
As tributes continue to arrive from law enforcement agencies, civic leaders, friends, and community members, Scott Gerlicher is being remembered as a respected public servant, devoted family man, trusted leader, and cherished friend. His legacy endures through the communities he helped protect, the people he mentored, and the countless lives he positively influenced throughout his distinguished career.
