Family, friends, and members of the Macon community are mourning the loss of Joshua Epps, 35, who died following a deputy-involved shooting on Bloomfield Road on Saturday night.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 5800 block of Bloomfield Road at approximately 8:43 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting that an individual had been injured. Upon arrival, deputies located a 51-year-old man who had reportedly been attacked with scissors during a disturbance inside a residence.

Investigators stated that the incident involved Joshua Epps and that deputies encountered him while responding to the scene. Authorities report that Epps remained armed with scissors and advanced toward a deputy despite repeated commands to drop the weapon. A deputy then discharged their firearm, striking Epps.

Emergency medical personnel responded, and Epps was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The 51-year-old victim received treatment at the scene for injuries described as non-life-threatening. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The sudden and tragic nature of the event has left family members and friends grieving the loss of a loved one while seeking answers about the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter. Those who knew Joshua remember him as a son, relative, and friend whose life extended far beyond the events of that evening.

Loved ones are reflecting on cherished memories, shared experiences, and the impact he had on those around him. His passing has left a void in the lives of many who cared deeply for him.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and observing a significant emergency response as law enforcement and medical personnel arrived at the scene. What began as a disturbance call quickly evolved into a critical incident that has drawn attention throughout the community.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent review of the shooting. In addition, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division has opened a separate investigation. Officials confirmed that the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of both reviews.

Authorities believe the incident stemmed from a domestic-related disturbance, though investigators continue working to establish the complete sequence of events.

As the investigations proceed, family members, friends, and community residents continue to mourn Joshua Epps and remember the life he lived. Many are finding comfort in the support of loved ones and the memories that remain.

The family is expected to announce obituary, funeral, and memorial service arrangements at a later date.
